What Is The Program About?
The program in Biology is a broadly based program which offers the skills and academic training for students who plan to enter either graduate programs or the professional schools. The program places emphasis on the structure and function of all life forms from the bacteria and viruses on one end of the spectrum to flowering plants and higher developed animals on the other. Special efforts are made to establish the student's fundamental knowledge base and to simultaneously introduce the contemporary of evolution, molecular biology and biotechnology. The student is constantly reminded of the significance of Biology in medicine, environmental science and day to day human existence.

Degree Offered: Bachelor of Science. (A masters degree program in planned for the very near future.)

Degree Requirements: 120 or more hours of credit; including 3) 8 hours in Biology, I year of General Chemistry, I year of Organic Chemistry, I year of General Physics and Mathematics through Pre-Calculus.

Career Options: There are numerous postgraduate opportunities available for a student with a degree in Biology. Admission to graduate training programs in all areas of the life sciences, allied health fields, science education and environmental studies are all options in addition to admission to colleges of medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine.

Position in private industry, the pharmaceutical fields and governmental agencies at the city, county, state and federal levels are also available.

Chemistry

What Is The Program About?
The mission of the Department of Chemistry is to serve as a support for other departments whose students require chemistry in their major. The departmental goal is to produce competitive students in chemistry so that they can make a significant difference in decreasing the manpower shortage in chemistry.

Degree Offered: Bachelor of Science Degree Requirements: 123 or more credits

Career Options: There are many career options for students with a major in chemistry. Students gain knowledge in chemical concepts which may lead to careers in medicine, pharmacy, research scientists, chemical engineering and laboratory technicians. Many choose teaching in secondary schools while others attend graduate school majoring in diverse areas.

Environmental Science

What Is The Program About?
The Environmental Science program is a broad-based multi-disciplinary curriculum that develops the scientific, technological, policy and management skills needed to address contemporary environmental and public health The program stresses exposure assessment, ecological and human health risk assessment environmental and human toxicology monitoring and environmental issues that confront society, and the analytical tools that are used to understand them. In addition, the students within the Department of Environmental Science receive and extensive introduction to the traditional concerns of water and air pollution, cast-benefit analvsis, policy formulation and analysis, and biostatistics.

Degree Offered: Bachelor of Science Degree Requirements: 123 or more Credits

Career Options: There are may career options for students with a degree in Environmental Science. Graduate school is possible in several fields that include resource and environmental economics, law school. Toxicology resource management and environmental policy, etc. Students gain a strong set of analytical tools that are needed by a growing number of government agencies, consulting firms, and the non profit sector who deal with a wide range of environmental analysis or energy and environmental policy-making. Furthermore, federal, state, and local regulatory agencies need experts to develop regulations, conduct tests. and assure compliance. Environmental scientists mav also work in basic research, determining how certain contaminants affect the environment and what changes need to be made.

Physics

What Is The Program About? Physics is natural processes of the surrounding world by means of mathematical description and modeling. The Physics curriculum at Shaw University prepares students for graduate study in Physics and for professional employment in a variety of areas related to Physics. Physics majors take foundation courses in mathematics and a variety of courses in physics: mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, modern physics, and quantum mechanics. Because physics course work encourages analytical thinking and good problem solving skills, it makes an excellent complement for students interested in mathematics, computer science, and engineering. Scholarships for physics majors are available.

Degree Offered: Bachelor of Science in Physics Degree Requirements: At least 120 credit hours including major courses
