General Baptist State Convention Makes $75,000 Donation
June 7, 2013 - The General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina presented Shaw President Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy with a $75,000 donation during the University's annual Baccalaureate Service. Dr. Haywood T. Gray, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the
Convention and a member of the Shaw University Board of Trustees, made the presentation.
Held the day before commencement, the Baccalaureate Service is a church service with members of the graduating class. The service began with a welcome from Dr. Yancy and musical selection from the Shaw University Choir. Following a prayer from Divinity School Senior Travis Judkins and a solo from Carisha Miller, Dr. Gray delivered the sermon. The service concluded with the signing of the University alma mater and the benediction.
For more than 145 years, the Convention has been a key financial supporter of the University. One of the primary reasons for the Convention was to raise money from among
the African-American Baptist churches in the state to support Shaw. Since becoming Executive Secretary-Treasurer, Gray has been the steward of more than $1.8 million for Shaw and its Divinity School. In March, the Convention donated $10,000 for the United Negro College Fund Scholarship Gala. The Thomas J. Boyd Chapel, Shaw Divinity School and the University Choir (among others), have been previous benefactors of Convention-generated funds.
