Humanities Seminar Helps Develop Writing Skills

June 10, 2013 - The Shaw University Department of Humanities hosted its second Annual Student Professional Development Seminar this spring. The seminar titled, "Writing at the Next Level: Taking Writing Skills with You to Work and Graduate School" included several speakers and a workshop focused on increasing writing skills.

The seminar began with a presentation from Humanities Professor Dr. Lisa Blair on the importance of foreign language skills. English Instructor Natalie Hill presented a workshop titled "Assessing Compatible Writing Skills for Careers and Graduate School". The seminar concluded with a presentation from keynote speaker William Stubbs, a 2002 alumnus. Titled "Equipped to Drive: Positioning Yourself for Future Navigation," Stubbs encouraged students to proactively seek internships, leadership positions and networking opportunities to be adequately prepared for future endeavors. He also encouraged students to improve their interpersonal, analytical and writing skills to succeed in both graduate school and in the workplace.

With positive feedback from attendees, the Department hopes to continue the seminar next year.
