Minority Association of Pre-Health Students Hosts Third Annual Reading Day Relay

The Minority Association of Pre-Health Students (MAPS) will host the 3rd Annual Reading Day Relay on Friday, May 4, 2018.  In correlation with the goals of the organization, the purpose of the event is to promote physical health through engaging and competitive physical activities, healthy eating and teamwork among students, faculty and staff.  Moreover, the event is designed to help students alleviate some of the stress they experience while preparing for final examinations.

In 2017, 19 teams participated in the Reading Day Relay, which included nostalgic field day events, such as the three-legged-race and sack race. During the event, participants danced from one station to next as DJ Joshua Williams (2016 DJ) and DJ Diondre Craig (2017 DJ) played tunes to trigger the teams.  Additionally, faculty exhibited their support and engagement in the activities by serving as judges.  Among those faculty who have served as judges during were Dr. Cyril Attiogbe, Dr. Beverly Clark, Dr. Lillian Cummings, Dr. Doreen Cunningham, Dr. Amadou Hama, Dr. Nacole King, the late Dr. Kim Leathers, Dr. John Moore and Dr. Deanna Tesch.

Furthermore, to ensure that all participants are physically and mentally sound, stations are set-up to monitor their care. Student Health Services, Allied Health students and the Counseling Center staff will monitor participants physical health and mental well-being.  The Counseling Center will also disseminate brochures to increase awareness about the various counseling services offered.

To promote healthy eating, a variety of nutritious foods will be available to satisfy participants’ palates.  For example, Michael Allen captivates us with his gourmet salads and Thompson Hospitality provides a variety of healthy food alternatives such as granola bars, oranges, raisins, and nuts. Other nutritious foods will also be available for participants and attendees to enjoy.

Reading Day Relay concludes with winners receiving recognition for their athletic accomplishments.
