Class of 2016 Arrives on Campus
August 7, 2012 – It is move-in week at Shaw University as more than 600 students, including freshmen and transfers, will now have a new home on campus as they get ready to begin class on August 15.
Over the next three days, students will be moving into the dorms and gearing up for the first day of class. Some people say the school has come a long way since last year's deadly tornadoes hit the campus. After spending months repairing the dorms and student center, Shaw University will start the school year free of damage.
It is the first sign that summer is coming to an end.
"I'm ready to get out of the house, I was packing before they gave me my acceptance letter," said rising freshman Tammy Smith.
For residential advisor Athena Curry, the move-in day marks a different milestone. Curry was an eyewitness to last year's deadly tornadoes that hit campus. But now after a year of repairs to the dorms and student center, the school will open its doors damage free.
"It brought us together in terms of students and faculty, and people have so much pride in Shaw University," said Curry.
It is a fresh start for the university and a new beginning for its incoming students.
"I think I can get used to it, I just need to meet the right people and I'll be OK," said Smith.
Returning students will move-in on August 11.
