Debra Latimore Named Vice President for Fiscal Affairs at Shaw University

 Debra LatimoreOctober 25, 2012 - Shaw University has named Debra K. Latimore as its new Vice President for Fiscal Affairs. Latimore is a Certified Public Accountant and most recently served as the University's Interim Vice President for Fiscal Affairs.

As a member of the University's leadership team, Latimore oversees and manages the day-to-day fiscal operations of the University, including budget, payroll, accounting, accounts payable/receivable, purchasing, contracting, investment reporting, procurement, treasury management, mail services/receiving and student accounts. She also prepares the University's operating budget, assesses current business practices to enhance productivity and ensures financial and business policies, processes and services are developed and executed to advance the University's strategic plan.

In addition, Latimore brings both higher education and private sector experience to the position, having served as the Director of Finance at OJ Group in Detroit; Tax Supervisor and Accounting and Business Services Supervisor at Grant Thornton, LLP in Charlotte, NC; and Controller at Johnson C. Smith University also in Charlotte. As Controller, she directed all accounting and reporting activities, supervised a staff of 14 and managed several university units, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, the cashier's office, student accounts, payroll and the bookstore.

"Ms. Latimore's financial and business expertise during her time as Interim Vice President of Fiscal Affairs helped to provide fiscal strength to this University and laid a solid foundation that will allow us to operate effectively," said Shaw University President Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy. "I welcome her continued leadership and creativity in developing a culture of fiscal efficiency."

Latimore has served as an online adjunct professor at several universities, including American Sentinel University, University of Phoenix, Colorado Technical University and Westwood College where she taught online courses in accounting, budgeting and personal finance. She received her Bachelor of Accountancy from Walsh College in Troy, MI and her Master of Science in Financial Management from the University of Maryland - University College. Latimore also completed coursework in Walsh College's Master of Science Taxation Program.
