Sowell Named Associate Dean of Students

September 6, 2013 – Shaw University today announced Stacey D. Sowell as its Associate Dean of Students. Sowell will provide overall direction and management of the University’s Student Affairs Office, including leading and directing Shaw’s Residence Life and Housing services.

Sowell previously served as an Admissions Counselor and Recruiter in the University’s Admissions Department for the last four years, where she coordinated recruitment events and cultivated relationships with key constituents to increase enrollment. Prior to joining Shaw, Sowell served as the Director of Student Activities and Volunteer Assistant Cheerleading Coach at Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, NC and as the Student Events Coordinator and part-time lecturer at Louisburg College. Additionally, Sowell served as the Resident Director for Bennett College in Greensboro, NC, overseeing several programs including the Johnetta B. Cole Global Diversity and Inclusion Institute “Power Girls” Summer Program.

“Ms. Sowell is an excellent addition to our staff and brings a wealth of experience that will ensure a safe and comfortable living and learning environment for our students,” said Dr. Jeffrey A. Smith, Vice President for Student Affairs and Administration. “Her knowledge and management of student programs and initiatives will be integral to the retention and success of our students and will enhance the Shaw educational experience.”

Sowell is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Counselors, the Southern Association of College Admissions Counselors and the National Association of College Deans, Registrars and Admissions Officers. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Shaw University and a master’s degree in English and African-American Literature from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

"I consider it an honor to serve in any capacity at my alma mater,” said Sowell. “In my new role, the safety, well-being and retention of our most precious commodity has been entrusted to me and I do not take that lightly. I look forward to the new challenges and opportunities that I will face as I get to know our students and work with the Student Affairs staff on a daily basis."
