CIRCULATION SERVICES
The Circulation Department is the center for public activities in the library. This is the area where books and other library materials are charged out and returned or renewed.
This department is staffed by a librarian and supported by student assistants.
Since Shaw University is a private institution, supported by grants, endowments, and awards, only students, faculty, staff, and consortium members are allowed borrowing privileges. Although, the public is welcomed to use the library for in house research and photocopying computer research is restricted only to Shaw University students, faculty staff and administrators.
POLICIES
1. Students’ university IDs with barcodes serve as borrowers’ cards and users may borrow up to a maximum of ten books at one time.
2. Books are loaned for two weeks with two renewals. However, loan periods may vary, depending on the demand for the material borrowed.
3. Overdue book fines are calculated at $0.15 per item, per day. Library users are personally responsible for materials charged out to them, and for returning or renewing items on or before the due date.
4. Replacement charges for lost materials are based on the average cost per item, plus billing fees/fines.
5. The library reserves the right to suspend a patron’s borrowing privileges. Causes for this action would include overdue book fines, unpaid lost book or other material, failure to respond to recall notices within a timely manner.
6. Fines may be paid by cash or check made to Shaw University Library. Checks may also be mailed with a copy of the bill to:
Circulation Librarian, Shaw University Library, Raleigh, NC 27601

How to Check out, Renew, or Return a Book
1. Locate required book by first using the online catalog. Record the call number and search for the material.
2. Present book and user ID to the circulation desk attendant.
3. The desk attendant will scan your ID and stamp the return date on the due date slip in the book.
4. The desk attendant desensitizes the book before charging it to the patron.
5. To RENEW a book the patron can either bring the book to the circulation desk, or phone the circulation department [546-8407] on or before the due date of the item.

RESERVE MATERIALS
The reserve book collection is located behind the circulation desk, and users must request items from the circulation staff. This collection comprises of current textbook, video/audio tapes, and other articles, and past course tests or examinations placed on reserve by professors for their students to use in preparing assignments.

Cooperating Raleigh Colleges (CRC)
This is a consortium of the five institution of higher learning within Raleigh, namely: Meredith College, North Carolina State University, Peace College, St. Augustine’s College, and Shaw University.
Agreements within this consortium afford the colleges' in house use and borrowing privileges of library resources.
1. In order to utilize the borrowing services offered by the consortium libraries, students must obtain a CRC borrowing request form from the circulation librarian each time such a transaction is required.
2. Faculty must obtain a borrower’s card from the librarian in order to utilize the borrowing privileges extended through the consortium.
3. Books are requested from consortium libraries only if they are not available in the requesting library.
4. Users are responsible for overdue or other book fees billed them by consortium libraries.
