EPIC Gala Breaks Two-Year $1 Million Fundraising Goal

Shaw University is celebrating yet another fundraising milestone.  University officials say the institution’s annual scholarship fundraising gala held on October 28 has raised more than $400,000, helping the historically black college meet its two-year $1 million dollar goal over the last two annual benefits; a record for philanthropic support raised.  University alumni, corporate partners and supporters attended the EPIC Gala event in Raleigh and didn’t miss the mark on partying with a purpose.

"We have worked very hard to share the institutional vision with our graduates, our students, and the community at large," said Shaw University President Tashni-Ann Dubroy. "And thankfully, those awareness building efforts have paid off in continuing investment and strategic growth for our efforts to serve Raleigh and North Carolina."
The scholarship support was punctuated by several corporate and foundation gifts, including donations from Cherokee Investments, Thompson Hospitality, A.J. Fletcher Foundation, First Citizens Bank, UNC Rex Healthcare, and PNC Financial Services.
These contributions, made during the gala celebration and over the course of the homecoming weekend, will go to support merit-based honors scholarship, emergency gap funding for seniors nearing degree completion, academic program enhancement and support the university’s athletics programs.
In September, Shaw welcomed a record-breaking incoming class of more than 600 first-year students, reversing a six-year trend of enrollment decreases at the university. With a student body now exceeding 2,200 students and more than 95 percent receiving financial aid, officials say the historic run of giving is dramatically needed to aid persistence through to graduation and rewarding careers.
"The commitment of our alumni and stakeholders matches the value our students see in a Shaw University education, so we’re honored that all sides of our university community collectively understand the value of delivering financial support and working hard in the classroom to strengthen our institutional culture of excellence," Dubroy said.
