Registration Information

  • Advising and Registration dates are listed on the Academic Calendar
  • Students should meet with their faculty advisor during the Advising Period to be cleared for registration.
  • Students register for classes using Bearsnet, once the faculty advisor removes the advising hold.
  • Adding and dropping classes deadline is on the Academic Calendar
  • Students may withdraw from a class after the drop-add period ends by filling out a Registration Transaction Form.
  • Once the last day to withdraw, listed on the calendar, is reached the student can no longer withdraw from a single class.
  • Students may withdraw from Shaw University, and all of their classes in a semester up to the final day of classes, using an official Withdrawal From Shaw form.

About Registration

To receive credit for your courses, official registration is required for each semester and summer session. Ensure you are fully registered by completing all necessary procedures, including arranging payment through cash, financial aid, or other methods as outlined by University policy.

    Course Registration and Advising

    Check Dates: Advising and registration dates are listed on the Academic Calendar.

    Meet with Advisor: Meet with your faculty advisor during the Advising Period to be cleared for registration.

    Register Online: Use Bearsnet to register for classes once your faculty advisor removes the advising hold.

    Add/Drop Classes: The deadline for adding and dropping classes is listed on the Academic Calendar.

    Withdraw from Classes: After the drop-add period ends, you can withdraw from a class by filling out a Registration Transaction Form. Note that once the last day to withdraw (listed on the calendar) is reached, you can no longer withdraw from a single class.

    Withdraw from University: To withdraw from Shaw University and all of your classes in a semester, you must use an official Withdrawal Form, available up to the final day of classes.

    Step-By-Step Registration Instructions

    Step 1: Meet with Your Academic Advisor

    Schedule a meeting with your academic advisor to get cleared for registration.

    Step 2: Register for Courses Online

    Access the Bearsnet Portal by entering your Username (Student ID number) and Password (PIN provided at check-in). Navigate to the ACADEMICS tab, select Add/Drop Courses, and choose the term you wish to register for. Use the Course Search tab to view available courses, then check the box next to the desired course and click ADD. Repeat this process until your schedule is complete. We recommend registering for 15 credit hours (12 is full-time).

    Eligibility for Registration

    Eligibility for registration is determined by the following categories:

    New Student: Once you receive your letter of admission, you are eligible to register on the designated registration days.

    Continuing Student: If you are currently registered and in good standing, with no registration holds, you are eligible to register.

    Re-admitted Student: If you were previously enrolled but not during the preceding semester, you must apply for and be granted readmission by the Admissions Office before you are eligible to register. Visit the Readmission page for more information.

    AR Hold: You may not register for classes if you have an AR hold. This hold is placed by Student Accounts due to an outstanding balance.

    Inter-Institutional Registration

    Cooperating Raleigh Colleges (CRC)

    The CRC includes Meredith College, North Carolina State University, Shaw University, St. Augustine’s University, Wake Technical Community College, and William Peace University. To participate, start by filling out the CRC Registration form (.pdf).

    Inter-institutional registration must be approved by your faculty advisor and Department Head. You must meet registration requirements and follow the procedures at both Shaw University and the host institution. Credits earned at CRC institutions are processed and posted just like those taken in residence at Shaw University. Full-time registration at Shaw University is required to be eligible for this program.

    Transcript Requests

    Shaw University has partnered with Parchment to provide a convenient online transcript ordering service. To request your official transcript(s), please visit the Parchment website.

    • Go to the Academic Calendar or on the University home page click on the Calendars icon.

    • Any current or former student at Shaw University can order a transcript through our online vendor Parchment.com.

      Order Transcript

      Unofficial Transcripts are available to current students for viewing and printing through the ShawU.edu, Bearsnet portal. Log into the student system and under the Student tab, select Grade Report/Unofficial Transcript. Alumni and past students don’t have access, please order an official transcript. Transcripts, either official or unofficial are not available to students who have an Accounts Receivable hold.

    • Any former Shaw University graduate can order a replacement diploma using the Replacement Diploma form retrievable at www.shawu.edu/Registrar_Forms_Documents/ (form is fillable). Former students cannot receive a replacement diploma if they have an Accounts Receivable hold on their account. Print and mail in with payment to Registrar’s Office, 118 E. South St, Raleigh NC 2760. Please allow 6-8 weeks for processing.

    • In order to ensure you will receive credit, please complete the Application for Summer Study at Another Institution form.

    • Continuing students can register on Bearsnet once they have meet with their advisors and had their advising holds removed. Students will register using Bearsnet self-service account during designated pre-registration periods and over the summer. Students can continue to drop/add classes online through the first week of each semester. The actual dates are recorded on the University Calendar for each semester. (Add/Drop can be found by clicking on the Students tab then Advising and Registration Information and Add/Drop Courses)

      Incoming freshmen and transfers will register during new student orientation (Detailed orientation information is emailed directly to students from the First Year Students Office.)

      Special (non-degree-seeking) students must register in person.

    • In order to enroll in a CRC course, students must submit a completed CRC Cross Registration Form to their advisor. (Please note: Students must be enrolled full-time at their home institution to register for a CRC course.)

    • Students must submit a Graduation Application & Audit Form, to their advisor by the appropriate deadline.

    • Yes. You must first submit the application for benefits form 22-1990 to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs online at https://benefits.va.gov/gibill/. After you have been approved, bring a copy of the certificate of eligibility to the Registrar’s Office, and the certifying official will then certify your enrollment to the Department of Veterans Affairs each semester that you are enrolled at the university, or until your benefits run out.

    • Verifications can be requested by submitting a completed Certification Services Request Form. Enrollment and degree verification can also be ordered from the National Student Clearinghouse at www.studentclearinghouse.org.

    • In order for the appropriate departments to be able to conduct a thorough evaluation of transfer credit, information about institutional accreditation, level of course work, grading scales, and units of credit must be available. Generally, this information is included on the transcript key of an official transcript. However, in the event that some or all of this information is not printed on the transcript, students may be contacted for additional clarification or documentation. Transfer credits can only be awarded for courses with final grades posted (no transfer credit is posted for in-progress course work). Once the courses have been evaluated the credits will appear on your unofficial transcript and the equivalencies can be viewed in Bearsnet by clicking on the Students tab then Advising and Registration and Course History.
