Overview

At the heart of the Department of Education and Child Development is a commitment to interrelationships and partnerships, shaping a dynamic educational environment. Our Education Department includes licensure programs in B-K, Elementary Ed, and NC Residency, as well as non-licensure programs focused on Early Child Development. ​

Programs Offered

Early Child Development (B-K Non Licensure)

Our practical, hands-on program readies you for diverse careers involving close interaction with young children and their families. With an early childhood education degree, you have the opportunity to shape and nurture our future by teaching and fostering growth in young minds. You’ll acquire proven techniques for engaging with newborns, infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.

Birth-Kindergarten, B.A. (Licensure)

​Our program equips aspiring educators with the skills and credentials needed to teach young learners aged birth to 5 years, including those with diverse needs, and prepares them to work effectively with children and families in various caregiving settings. Upon completion of the program, graduates become eligible for the initial B-K licensure, qualifying them to teach in public North Carolina Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classrooms.

Elementary Education, B.A.

Shaw University’s Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education stands out in its commitment to preparing educators. The program integrates a demanding academic curriculum with substantial clinical practice in partner school sites. Upon graduation and the completion of student-teaching, students are eligible for their initial licensure to teach grades K-6 in North Carolina, establishing a strong foundation for success in their own classrooms. Shaw University graduates make a widespread impact by teaching in counties all around North Carolina.

Early Childhood Education, M.S.

The Department of Education and Child Development offers the Master of Science in Early Childhood Education, a program crafted to elevate your career in this crucial field. NC Residency Pathway (Licensure)

Are you a college graduate seeking a career change? Explore Shaw University’s alternative licensure program. With the Residency License route, you can start teaching immediately without prior training or experience. Requirements include a bachelor’s degree, relevant coursework or passing a content area examination, being requested by a local board of education, enrollment in an educator preparation program, and meeting State Board requirements.
