Welcome to Shaw University!

You are officially one of the newest members of the Shaw Bear family. We are committed to transforming you into a global leader, who will make an incredible impact on the world in which we live. The goal of New Student Orientation is to introduce students and families to campus services, resources and the expectations of collegiate life at Shaw University. During New Student Orientation, students and families attend information sessions, participate in social activities, interact with peer orientation mentors and meet with an academic advisor to discuss your career pursuits, then register for courses.

New Student Orientation

Upcoming Orientation Dates

New orientation dates will be provided when available.

First Year Students

    1. Pay the $170 enrollment deposit, non-refundable.
    2. Complete your Pre-Orientation virtual modules. Log in using your Shaw University username (student ID number) and pin to access New Student Orientation modules: orientation.shawu.edu.
    3. Complete your 2023-2024 FAFSA, if you are planning to accept any form of financial aid. Shaw FAFSA Code: 002962.
    4. Register for New Student Orientation (click here to register).
    5. Complete your housing reservation form. (Click here, will not be processed without paid enrollment deposit) Please note: Students will receive the link to sign up for move-in day within 3-5 business days of housing application receipt.
    6. Submit your health physical form, immunization records, and upload a copy of your COVID vaccination card via Point and Click system (instructions given during step #2- virtual new student orientation modules).
    7. Set up your payment plan (if needed) and make your first tuition payment (Visit your Bearsnet portal to view bill under Account Statement).
    8. Submit your official transcript(s) to the Office of Admissions and Recruitment at admissions@shawu.edu.
    9. Complete Your English and Mathematics Placement Exam (Students will receive an email with log in credentials to complete the exams).
    10. Attend Student Orientation: January 5-6, 2024 (course registration will take place during new student orientation)
  • The purpose of New Student Orientation at Shaw University is to prepare students to be academically successful by:

    • Creating a welcoming environment that builds a sense of community among the incoming class and connects them to faculty, staff, and other students.
    • Providing information and resources that will allow students to make informed academic decisions and healthy social choices.
    • Providing a framework for four years of success through the communication of expectations, norms, and standards.

    New Student Orientation consists of two parts: virtual orientation modules and in-person sessions. (Please note that students must complete the virtual modules to receive an invitation to attend the in-person sessions.)

    Once you receive your official acceptance letter from Shaw University’s Office of Admissions, you will log in to the orientation platform by visiting http://orientation.shawu.edu to complete the virtual orientation modules. The orientation platform is comprised of interactive modules to introduce you to campus life, students, university resources, and academic support. Virtual new student orientation modules are to be completed by ALL new, incoming first-year and transfer students.

    Your New Student Orientation experience will be like none other! Upon arriving on campus for New Student Orientation, students will have completed ALL administrative tasks (financial clearance, course registration, medical clearance, and housing requests), creating a seamless onboarding process. Orientation will take place over three (3) days to provide a welcoming experience for our incoming class. In addition to providing a welcoming orientation experience for students, we will engage parents in a way that leaves them feeling confident in allowing us to serve their student and prepared to best support their student. Agenda will be emailed prior to arrival.

  • Shaw University’s policy mandates that all new students have a record of medical history and a physical examination report signed by a physician on file in the Student Health Center. This information is required at the time of enrollment at Shaw University and should be updated while attending the university. The students who do not have current medical requirements on file will not be permitted to move into the residence halls. Please see the list below of required vaccinations:

    Vaccine Number Doses Required Before School Entry*
    Diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis 3 doses
    Polio 3 doses
    Measles 2 doses
    Mumps 2 doses
    Rubella 1 dose
    Hepatitis B (Hep B) 3 doses
    Varicella 1 dose

    Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis: Individuals entering a college or university must have 3 doses of tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis; one of which must be a Tdap booster (given after 2005).

  • Prior to arriving on campus, you will receive an electronic golden key via email that signifies you have completed all the steps to enrollment and are ready for MOVE-IN! Please be sure to check your email before reporting to campus. If you did not receive a golden key, you will not be permitted to move into the residence hall. Please contact the Office of Student Retention at OSR@shawu.edu if you have any questions.

    If your assigned room is in Fleming Kee, you will report to: 724 S. Person Street, Raleigh, NC 27601.

Transfer Students

  • As a member of the incoming transfer class, you are about to embark upon an exciting new journey at Shaw University. The Transfer Student Orientation program is your key to a successful start as one of the newest members of our community. It is designed to introduce you to many of the academic and co-curricular opportunities that Shaw has to offer!

    Transfer Student Orientation dates are yet to be confirmed, we will share this information as the summer approaches. Please expect a full day of activities to introduce you to academics at Shaw U, campus life, and so much more. Adult Students

    1. Pay your $170 Enrollment Fee via your application portal.
    2.  Complete your Financial Aid
    3. Receive your PIN, Advisor and Shaw email.
      • Await an email with your PIN to access BearsNet which is your student portal.
      • BearsNet Portal – You will also receive in this email your Shaw email address as well as your advisor information.
    4. Advisement
      • Your advisor is assigned by the Registrar’s Office. Your advisor will be able to cover your transfer credits and register you into your courses for the upcoming term.
  • As a member of the incoming class, you are about to embark upon an exciting new journey at Shaw University! The Adult Learner Orientation program is your key to a successful start as one of the newest members of our community. It is designed to introduce you to many of the academic and co-curricular opportunities that Shaw has to offer!

    On ground orientation will take place the Thursday before the Fall and Spring Semester courses start. An email will be sent for you to RSVP as the date gets closer. Please plan to stay at least two hours and come photo ready to get your student ID made.

New Parents & Guardians

We understand that this is an exciting and emotional time for you and your student. We hope to make the transition as smooth as possible, for both of you. Please join us for New Parent Orientation to ensure that you are informed and able to best support your student. During New Parent Orientation, you should expect to hear from: Academic Deans, Office of Financial Aid, Office of Student Accounts, the Counseling Center, and Academic Support Staff. These sessions will take place on day one of New Student Orientation (typically on a Friday from 9am-2pm). We look forward to meeting you and we’re excited to welcome you to our university.

Directions & Getting Around

Below are directions to the Shaw University’s Raleigh Main Campus, located at 118 E. South Street, Raleigh, North Carolina.

From I-40 East take exit 299, veer right onto Hammond Rd/Person St.  Continue on Person St. in the left lane, next turn left onto South St., at stoplight turn left onto Blount St. continue in the left lane.  After traveling under the bridge prepare to turn left into parking area (Gate7).

From I-40 West take exit 299, turn left at the light onto Hammond Rd/Person St.  Continue on Person St. in the left lane, next turn left onto South St., at stoplight turn left onto Blount St. continue in the left lane.  After traveling under the bridge prepare to turn left into the parking area (Gate 7).

Available parking for New Student Orientation is located near the intersection of S. Blount Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Please note that parking on the street is restricted, pay close attention to signage for details.
