Meet Shaw U

Shaw University has been a beacon of opportunity for more than 150 years. This is a place that offers those who have too often been left behind an education grounded in the values of excellence and integrity, and focused on the future.

Shaw prepares you for more than making a living. Here, you’ll learn how to make a life. At Shaw U, students learn to be responsible for themselves and others, to be leaders, and to uplift their communities.

Why Shaw

A Community That’s Like Family

Ask people here what’s special about Shaw, and there’s one thing you’ll hear from everyone. From faculty to fellow students, we care for one another and hold each other accountable.

When you step on the campus, you know it’s home. You get butterflies.

A History of Progress

Our Story

The school’s early students met in sharecroppers’ cabins, crafting bricks to build their own classrooms and create the first HBCU in the South. Read about our other “firsts.”

Shaw Today

At Shaw U, we don’t rest on our storied past. We are focused on the future and building partnerships that can benefit our community as well as the City of Raleigh. A remarkable road lies ahead.

    The ShawU District Plan

A project that began with the rezoning of 27 acres of Shaw’s campus will lead to the preservation of our historic buildings, the creation of new facilities, and business development for Downtown Raleigh.

    Research Triangle Campus

Opportunities in technology are even more accessible thanks to Shaw’s collaboration with the Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina. The RTP is home to a growing list of tech and innovation companies, and our dedicated space there will allow us to offer our students career fairs and a new pipeline to opportunity.

    Tech Advisory Council

Specialists from Apple, Google, Cisco, IBM, Red Hat and other tech giants are advising Shaw U on the path forward so we can be ahead of the game in education and innovation. Our Technology Advisory Council mentors also provide the Shaw community with a critical link to resources and relationships in the tech sector, giving students an essential edge.

    Center for Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is an emerging field that’s lacking participation by minority graduates. Shaw’s Center for Cybersecurity Education and Research offers a concentration in Cyber Operations that is training students not just in technical skills, but also in cyber policy, law, and ethics—preparing them to join security teams in government security teams in various government and non-government agencies.

    Racial and Social Justice

Building on our heritage, the Center for Racial and Social Justice promotes meaningful social change by building engagement in issues of rights and justice among students and the broader community. Certificate programs engage students in activism, strategic thinking, and leadership development to confront the nation’s and world’s great challenges related to racial and ethnic differences.
