Campus Safety
As a Shaw student, you’ll learn to take responsibility for yourself while you look out for your friends and classmates. Our community of learners and teachers is respectful, thoughtful, compassionate, tolerant, and proud of who we are as Bears. Alcohol and drug use are banned on campus—but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun while we stay safe together. The University’s safety features help make that so.
A Secure Campus
Shaw’s Campus Police and Security Department make your safety the priority. They’re on call 24/7. Alert systems notify students and families in the event of a public safety or natural disaster concern.
Campus Police
Shaw’s Campus Police and Security officers enforce traffic safety and respond to emergencies, working to provide every student a secure place for living and learning.
Controlled Access
Visitors are welcome on campus between 6am and 10pm daily, but campus access is restricted—to enter, you must have a parking and/or visitor pass from the Campus Police & Security Office.
Curfew
Shaw’s main campus and undergraduate Living & Learning centers uphold a nightly curfew. After curfew, students and visitors aren’t allowed to hang out on the Quad or in first-floor building areas.
Campus Alerts
Shaw has added Regroup Mass Notification system to our communications toolbox. Regroup allows the University to send emergency notification messages via telephone, email, text message or all three methods. All current faculty, staff and students are preregistered using the contact information on file.

Raleigh: A Safe City
With campus sitting right in downtown Raleigh, it’s good to know that Forbes magazine has rated this among the top 15 safest cities in the U.S. with a population over 300,000.
