Your Physical Health

Shaw is a smoke- and alcohol-free campus with an eye on keeping you fit, strong and focused on your studies. When you’re not feeling great, whether you’re suffering from a sports injury or a sore throat, you have access as a full-time student to unlimited Student Health Center visits.

At the Health Center, you can get medical care and advice from nurses certified in first aid and CPR. If you’re ill or need a physical, you can see a physician. Allergy shots, blood pressure and glucose monitoring, vaccinations, and other services are available along with basic care for injuries and illnesses.

Your Mental Health

We know college can feel stressful from time to time, especially if you have learning differences or social challenges. Shaw’s professional counselors offer free, confidential support for anyone who needs it.

Counseling for All

    Emotional and Psychological Counseling

Lots of students have to deal with mentally taxing situations while they’re at college—even at a friendly and warm place like Shaw. You can get guidance for stress and depression at the Counseling Center, as well as couples counseling for relationship issues.

Help with Coping and Survival Skills

Counseling Center specialists have experience in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and anger management. No matter what you’re working to overcome, they’ll meet you where you are and help you create an individualized plan.

    Guidance from the University Chaplain

Shaw’s Chaplain fills a role complementary to that of the Counseling Center, acting as a sounding board and mentor. Pastoral or grief counseling and life coaching are available.

    Help with Substance Abuse

Counseling Center experts are trained to help people who want to deal with an alcohol or substance abuse issue. They’ll lend a nonjudgmental and confidential ear to any student who is struggling. You’ll find a safe space here—the backup you need to make smart decisions. You can also find help if you need to support friends.

    Help with Disabilities

Shaw’s Disability Services program offers accommodation and assistance to all students who have learning or physical disabilities. Specialists are here to help you participate in everything that interests you, lead a happy life on campus, and help you achieve academically.

    Staying Fit

Physical activity is fun, social, and helps you feel—and maybe even think—your best. Shaw offers you all sorts of sports to get involved in, both competitive and non-competitive. You don’t have to go out for Varsity to join a team or meet up with others to move your body.

Intramural sports at Shaw include everything from basketball, football, soccer and volleyball to table tennis and flag football, cornhole and billiards. Practices and competitions take place on campus and in parks and facilities around Raleigh.

You’ll also find workout areas in each of the student residence halls, where you can stretch your limbs and clear your mind after a long work session—or anytime!

    Health Insurance

Student health care at Shaw includes an insurance plan for injuries and illness to supplement your family’s coverage. The plan covers most students, and costs are nominal.
