Overview

Shaw University Counseling Services offers free and confidential services, delivered by competent and experienced counseling professionals. We offer short-term individual, couples and group counseling to Shaw University students.

The counseling staff is dedicated to assisting students with their psychological and emotional needs in efforts to help students make better decisions and healthier choices which ultimately lead to greater academic performance and an increase in overall student retention. We also provide interventions for students with substance abuse needs.

Counseling Services is a place where services are nonjudgmental. It is a place where students will find understanding and acceptance in whatever they are going through.

Along with psychological services, the counseling center also offers disability services for those students identified with a disability. The staff takes pride in their work and look forward to taking the collegiate journey with each and every Shaw University student.

Emergency Incidents & Protocol

The Shaw University Counseling Service’s focus is to provide comprehensive and effective support services for our students. Our staff provides individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, substance abuse prevention and intervention, healthy choices, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, conflict resolution and anger management. We endeavor to provide services that are nonjudgmental and confidential, and hope that all students feel safe and open in sharing their concerns.

The staff meet the students where they are and create an individualized plan that is tailored to the needs of the student. For many students, this approach enables them to move forward and successfully handle the challenges they come upon.

  • Confidential counseling is provided for students who have personal concerns, difficulties adjusting to the college and other stressors with daily living. Individual counseling is short-term in nature. Services are available if long-term treatment is necessary.

  • Support groups are available on a continual and as-needed basis. Students can request for specific support groups to be implemented.

    Services include but are not limited to the following:

    • Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Prevention
    • Understanding sexual orientation and identity
    • Anger Management

  • Counselors are available to host faculty workshops in classrooms and residential halls. Some outreach activities include suicide prevention and drug and alcohol awareness and prevention. Please contact any staff member for additional information.

  • Substance abuse counseling will be provided in an assertive and positive effort to empower the administration, faculty, staff and students to maintain an addiction free campus. The addiction professional will conduct workshops and provide both individual and group sessions. The Shaw University has a Zero tolerance policy regarding drugs and alcohol.

    Students receive optimal care, treatment, and education relevant to drug and alcohol prevention. Peer educators have been established to make recommendations, and provide practical strategies for greater communications among the entire campus. Any student who violates our drug policy will be referred to our Judicial Affairs division.

  • When either the Health or Counseling Center is made aware of a student who is prescribed a psychiatric medication an official notification form must be completed. The official notification will contain student background information on medication and recommendations from prior physicians.

    1. Notification form must be forwarded to either the Health Center (physical) or Counseling Center (psychiatric).
    2. After being out on medical or psychiatric leave or being discharged from the hospital, students must report to the Counseling Center and Student Health Center with Discharge instructions for follow up and meet with the University Physician prior to returning to Shaw University. Students will not be allowed to report to any classes without a clearance slip from the University Physician.
    3. Complete the notice of Discharge Follow-up form
    4. Complete the Authorization to Release form

Assessments

Standardized Instruments used, but not limited to, include the following:

  • Myers-Briggs Type Indicator:  The Myers–Briggs Type Indicator is an introspective self-report questionnaire with the purpose of indicating differing psychological preferences in how people perceive the world around them and make decisions.
  • College Adjustment Scale: Identifies problems frequently experienced by college students, and assesses nine areas of adjustment.
  • The Coping Inventory: Assesses adaptive and maladaptive coping habits, skills and behaviors.
  • The Basic Personality Inventory: Identifies maladjustment and personal strengths.
  • Substance Abuse assessment and evaluation.
  • eCheckUpToGo programs are personalized, evidence based online prevention intervention ie, alcohol, marijuana, sexual violence prevention and tobacco

After Hours Procedures

Evenings & Weekends:
After office hours and on weekends, students may use the counselor on call when they are in a crisis. The student must call Campus Security & Police at 919-546-8249 in order to reach the Counselor on Call. The security officer will call the counselor on call, who will then call back the student at risk. Please note: During these times, the Counseling Center strongly encourages students in crisis to use the community resources listed below.
